Do you love reading to children and want to foster a lifelong love of books? Become a Read While You Wait volunteer! We are looking for a volunteer to lead storytime in the Hayward Social Services waiting room.
Read While You Wait is a project of the Hayward Public Library’s Literacy Plus Program. We recruit, train, and place volunteer story readers in government agencies and waiting rooms in the City of Hayward. The goal of the program is to extend the reach of the library, introducing children to the pleasure of stories, books, and reading and to promote early literacy. We provide all the books, puppets and songs ... You provide the enthusiasm!
To prepare volunteers for their placement we offer a training session, observation at an existing site, and supplemental materials. Once the training is complete, the volunteer is placed in a mutually selected site where he/she will present a 30-45 minute storytime once a week. Volunteers must attend the training session, be fingerprinted and agree to volunteer for six months at one of our selected sites.
