Rubus

Volunteers with an interest in plant identification and data collection are needed for a Portland-wide community science project!

Non-native Rubus (blackberry) is widespread in the Pacific Northwest and causes negative impacts to native habitats. This community science project (currently in the second year of data collection) will survey the presence of four non-native Rubus species in select Portland parks and natural areas throughout the city. The research will help with the early detection of a relatively new invader to northern Oregon, Rubus vestitus, and inform invasive Rubus management and control strategies.

This community science project is being coordinated by staff at Hoyt Arboretum. A training session for Invasive Rubus Community Science volunteers is scheduled for Wednesday, May 22 from 10-11am. During this training, volunteers will learn to identify the four invasive Rubus species, choose their assigned parks or natural areas, and learn to collect data and record their observations.

Volunteers should be available to visit at least 2 assigned parks or natural areas on their own from June through August. Each site/survey visit should include enough time for walking around and looking for the four Rubus species. The total time involved for volunteering will depend on the size of the assigned park/natural area and degree of Rubus infestation
