ORGANIZATION: STAR of Seattle Computer Center

lab

The STAR Center is a free computer lab that offers a range of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities. It is completely volunteer run and so finding individuals to help keep the center open is very important. Ideally, our volunteers commit to a minimum of 3 months.

We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help monitor the lab during open hours which can include helping visitors with computer questions, basic troubleshooting, answering the phone, and making sure that daily operations of the lab run smoothly.

Volunteers here at STAR perform mainly a receptionist job. Some of a volunteer’s duties include:

  • greet visitors to the lab
  • help them sign in if the user is unable to
  • direct users to the appropriate workstations and assistive technology if need be
  • answer the STAR center phone lines and take messages as needed
  • maintain a neat and orderly environment in the lab

Unless there is a lot of users at the lab, volunteers have a lot of down time and sometimes technical help is not needed at all. The volunteer is welcome to use their workstations for their own work.

We usually look for volunteers who have experience working in diverse populations and with people who have disabilities.

We are open Mondays-Fridays, from 1pm to 6pm. Volunteers can volunteer during any 2-hour intervals.
