Organization History and Model
Cradles to Crayons (C2C) was launched in 2002 by Lynn Margherio with the mission to provide children from birth through age 12, living in low-income and homeless situations, with the essential items they need to thrive - at home, at school, and at play. C2C partners with various schools, corporations and community groups for donations. C2C partners with over 50 social service organizations serving homeless and low-income families to distribute packages of these essential items to the children that need them the most. Through the support of volunteers, we were able to serve 60,000 children in need last year. Reaching our goal of serving over 82,000 children this year requires a community-wide effort. In addition to the commitment of our corporate sponsors, family supporters, and partner agencies, Champion Corps members play a critical role in this effort.
Champion Program Overview
To support Chicago’s children, Cradles to Crayons needs volunteers who can commit to regular volunteer shifts. As a Champion volunteer, you will lead volunteer shifts, create an enjoyable volunteer experience, and help make a difference in the lives of Chicagoland children and their families.
Responsibilities include leading large groups, engaging volunteers with relevant Cradles to Crayons information, and providing great customer service for volunteers of various backgrounds.
Champion volunteers help prepare Cradles to Crayons stations, welcome volunteers, and act as a resource during volunteer shifts. Champion volunteers also help staff members with logistical needs such as restocking stations, creating kits, and general upkeep of warehouse. No previous experience needed, and all training will be provided.
We are looking for Champion volunteers who can commit to volunteering at least twice a month for a minimum of 6 months. Volunteer shifts are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and weekends from 9:30AM-12:30PM and 1PM-4PM.

Mission Statement
Cradles to Crayons (C2C), founded in 2002, provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive--at home, at school, and at play. We supply clothing, shoes, diapers, school supplies, and more, free of charge. Our vision is that one day all children will have the essentials they need to thrive.
Description
Two in 5 kids in the United States are currently facing Clothing Insecurity, going without basic essentials like pants, shoes, diapers, and school supplies during their critical development years. Three of the top 10 reasons kids miss school are rooted in Clothing Insecurity-just one example of the significant short- and long-term social and economic costs when these needs go unmet. Cradles to Crayons keeps Clothing Insecurity at the core of our mission and is the only large-scale nonprofit organization to focus on this resource gap. Since its founding, Cradles to Crayons has distributed more than three million customized packages of essentials to children in Massachusetts, Greater Philadelphia, Chicagoland, and nationally, through Giving Factory Direct-a first-in-kind online product donation platform launched in 2021.
Volunteers help to quality check, sort, and organize donations of essential items - such as clothing, shoes, books, school supplies, winter accessories, hygiene items, and more. We welcome volunteers as young as 5 years old with a parent/guardian to volunteer.
