Pet Companion

Do you have a pet who loves people? Do you enjoy spending time with others? Hospice of the Miami Valley is looking for pet companion volunteers to bring their pet to visit patients in public health care facilities and/or patient homes. As we all know, animals create a special connection with people, and they often reach patients in a way no one else is able to do. From simply spreading smiles everywhere they go, to getting a non-verbal individual talking, the experience of sharing your pet is unforgettable!

Volunteers are an important part of the Hospice team. Friendly visitor volunteers for HOMV offer support, companionship, and practical, caring help to patients and their families facing a life-limiting illness. The help and support that our volunteers give is returned to them in countless ways.

This position offers flexibility in time commitment and schedule, so you can volunteer as little or as much as you like. Our Volunteer Coordinator will provide specialized training and will walk with you every step of the way. You will be supported in your role by a competent and caring group of nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, and fellow volunteers. Pets must be at least 1 year old, up to date on all vaccinations, be obedient to their handler, and be able to behave calmly around a variety of people. Training or certification for animal assisted therapy is encouraged, but not required. Your pet’s abilities and behavior will be assessed by HOMV staff before being approved to visit patients.

Volunteers will report to our office in Xenia. However, volunteers are needed in communities within Darke, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby counties.

If you'd like to become a caring presence to those in need, please call Volunteer Coordinator Anne Metzger at (937) 728-3412 or email metzgera@homv.org
