ORGANIZATION: Utah's Hogle Zoo

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s Field Technician program is designed to give people the opportunity to learn about the animal world, ecology and conservation through taking part in one of the Zoo’s conservation programs.

Conducting work off zoo grounds, a typical day would involve meeting at the Zoo early morning, driving to a the monitoring site, hiking in (30 mins- 2 hours) and surveying an area. Our main focus over the summer months this upcoming year is the boreal toad, so expect wetland areas and alpine lakes.

Data collected goes towards discovering more about this state protected amphibian, so we can provide the best conservation measures possible.

Both day trips and longer camping trips of up to four days are carried out over summer, all around Utah. All travel to and from the zoo, food and field equipment is included.

Citizen Science Wildlife Biologist

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Field Technician activities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducting visual encounter surveys for boreal toad around the state
  • Collecting water quality measurements
  • Collecting habitat data
  • Sometimes long, always beautiful hikes

GOALS

  • To assist the UDNR in their collection of information on a state sensitive species
  • To identify presence/ absence of boreal toad throughout various sites in Utah
  • To collect water quality and habitat data at various alpine wetlands

REQUIREMENTS

Must be 18 years or older

Enjoy being outdoors, independent of weather conditions

Hike an incline

Not afraid to get a little dirty!

SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT

Volunteers from all volunteer categories have the option to participate in Field Technician volunteering.

New volunteers from outside of the Zoo may sign up for one survey day or multiple.

PHYSICAL DEMAND AND SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires long periods of standing and walking.

Overnight trips will be camping in undeveloped locations with no access to amenities

COMPENSATION

All volunteers at Utah’s Hogle Zoo are considered non-paid employees.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s 42-acres are located in Salt Lake City, Utah at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. It houses a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, birds and other animals from diverse ecosystems around the world. Our goal is to increase understanding of, and responsibility for, local and global animal species and ecosystems

There are more than 2,000 USDA licensed wildlife exhibitors in the US but less than 10% of them have been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( AZA). Hogle Zoo is one of that 10%, which means that it is recognized as being one of the best zoos in the world. Hogle Zoo is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums ( WAZA)
