Volunteering for Pacific Historic Parks gives you the opportunity to be a part of preserving important pieces of American and Hawaiian history. Nearly 2 million people from around the world visit the USS Arizona Memorial to pay their respect each year.

Volunteering as a transcription volunteer gives you the opportunity to support Pacific Historic Parks’ mission by preserving the history and legacy of those directly impacted by World War II.

Job purpose

To assist the Resource Specialist with transcribing oral history interviews and/or first-hand written accounts from those who survived the Pearl Harbor attacks.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Transcribe, word for word each oral history interview
    • Oral history interviews: Each interview is approximately 1 hour long and may take up to 5 hours to transcribe.
    • Written history interviews: Each interview could take approximately an hour to type out the transcription.
    • Questions about the assigned task to be directed to the Resource Specialist.
    • Questions or concerns regarding the volunteer opportunity to be directed to the Education Volunteer and Program Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Ability to focus and work independently. The task is tedious.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English.
  • Organized and detail orientated.
  • Typing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Google Drive.

* If you are proficient in the Japanese language, please notate.

Working conditions

May be done remotely.

Physical requirements

  • The use of a computer for an extended period of time.
  • listening to audio recordings for an extended period of time.
