The National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) is looking for volunteers to help out during our 2019 Congressional Shadow Day Experience May 31 - June 6 in Washington, DC.
For the past seven years, NFYI has worked with the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth to put on Shadow Day. Current and former foster youth ages 18 to 30 are invited to Washington, D.C. to be paired with their members of Congress for a day on Capitol Hill. The 120 participants spend a week gaining a better understanding of the role of Congress in the child welfare system and learning how they can make their voices heard on issues they care about in their own communities.
With 120 (!) participants joining us, we’re looking for volunteers who can help with any OR all of the following:
- The check-in/check-out process
- Setting up for workshops, evening activities, and an awards ceremony
- Assisting the NFYI staff as needed
- Running last-minute errands
- Occasionally transporting participants
- Greeting and monitoring participants during breakfast and ensuring they begin their day on time
- Taking pictures or video
Whether you can join us for part of a day or for the entirety of Shadow Week, we’re looking for caring and patient volunteers who are committed to helping young adults develop the tools they need to advocate for improvements to the child welfare system. To join us, please fill out this Google form: https://forms.gle/zx7XXD6pcNGPP7S6A

Mission Statement
The National Foster Youth Institute envisions a nation where all children are raised in safe and loving families and where the child welfare system serves as a beacon of hope for families in need.
Description
To achieve our vision, we aim to transform the child welfare system and vastly improve outcomes for foster youth by empowering the youth and their families, building a grassroots movement in 435 congressional districts across the country, and partnering with committed policymakers. Truly transformative foster care reform will not come to fruition until the individuals who have personally experienced the child welfare system have a strong voice in the policymaking process. And NFYI is dedicated to ensuring their place at the table.
