Working with Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department staff, volunteers will be loading crates with recycled oyster shell then transporting and placing the shell in areas where it is needed to complete an oyster bar restoration project located in Perico Bayou. Once in place these shells will serve as an appropriate substrate for larval oysters to settle and grow. Oysters play a pivotal role in local estuaries providing crucial habitat for a multitude of marine organisms while filtering water and reducing erosion.
Be prepared to get wet and muddy at this workday, which will include wading through a 60-foot section of waist-deep water to reach the oyster bars. This is strenuous work requiring participants to lift and carry crates of shell weighing 25 to 35 pounds. Please note that there are no restrooms at this work area and the nearest public restrooms are located approximate ¾ of a mile to the east at Palma Sola Causeway Park. Closed-toe shoes that strap or tie tightly to your feet are required and don't forget to bring water, snacks, and sun protection (long sleeve shirt and pants, hat, sunscreen).
The meeting location for this event at the northeast side of the Manatee Avenue (SR 64) bridge over Perico Bayou. It is located east of Perico Preserve and west of Palma Sola Causeway Park. Parking for participants will be in the grass area just east of the entranceway to the water path. Please review the meeting location before you arrive if you are not familiar with the area and be mindful of traffic when entering and exiting the site.
