Volunteer

What would I be doing as a Visitor Experience Exhibit Guide? Teams of volunteers, student employees, and staff work together in our visitor hall to connect with the public using hands-on, marine science interpretation. Exhibit Guides assist visitors at the touch pools and interpret the aquarium and exhibit hall.

What are the requirements? Must be responsible, punctual, and reliable; enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds; desire to learn and communicate marine science and conservation to the public through hands-on activities and engaging interpretation; be comfortable working with live marine animals and working with children; enjoy working cooperatively with a team of other volunteers and staff; be at least 15 years old; have the attitude of a life-long learner. Previous knowledge of marine science or conservation preferred, but not required. No experience is necessary.

How do I apply to become a Visitor Experience Exhibit Guide? The first step is to submit an application on our website: https://seymourcenter.ucsc.edu/volunteer/ Applications will be reviewed, and we will reach out to you when the soonest opportunity to train arises.

When and where are trainings? All training sessions take place at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. Our soonest orientation is Saturday, August 5 from 11 AM - 2 PM. Generally, we host orientations monthly. After completing orientation, you will be required to sign up for three shadow shifts where you will shadow an experienced volunteer on how to interpret and interact with visitors in the exhibit hall.

APPLICATIONS ARE REVIEWED ON A ROLLING BASIS.

If you need more information or have any questions,
please contact the Volunteer Office at volunteers@ucsc.edu or (831) 459-3854.
