About DOUGLAS COUNTY MUSEUM FOUNDATION

Location:

123 MUSEUM DR, ROSEBURG, OR 97471, US

Mission Statement

The Douglas County Museum of Natural and Cultural History exists to collect, preserve, interpret, and display our community's shared history through evocative exhibits and dynamic programming. The role of the Museum is one of education. Through the use of real historic objects and period reproductions we strive to share information on how past events have led to current conditions, and how today's actions will shape the future. The connection between past and future and the implications of human action is a central mission to the Douglas County Museum. This connection is particularly important for school-aged children to understand. Acknowledging this, the Museum is refocusing its energies toward children with a redevelopment of our exhibition areas to make them more kid-friendly. When children can better engage with the information presented within an exhibition the more readily they learn.

Description

With two locations in beautiful Douglas County, Oregon, Umpqua Valley Museums takes care to preserve our local natural and cultural history for generations to come. Our museums connect our community to their history and we try each day to strengthen that connection and foster empathy and understanding through cultural events and educational activities.

The Douglas County Museum in Roseburg, Oregon has been collecting, preserving and exhibiting natural and cultural history items for more than 50 years. We house Oregon’s largest natural history collection, where more than 7,500 items are used to help tell the ancient and contemporary stories of the Umpqua River Valley. The Museum also provides public access to research materials for those who are interested in the people, places and events of Douglas County. Through the Lavola Bakken Research Library, public access is granted for a wide array of printed materials including books, manuscripts, photos, newspapers, and much more.

The Umpqua River Lighthouse in Winchester Bay, Oregon offers daily tours of the rebuilt 1890 lighthouse. Inside the museum you’ll find hundreds of documents, photographs, and artifacts that illustrate the story of the Umpqua River Lighthouse from its early existence as a Lifesaving Station to the U.S. Coast Guard station that sits on the same site today.
