Position Summary
To facilitate an Alzheimer’s Association affiliated Navigating M.C.I. and Dementia group for care partners and individuals with early stage Mild Cognitive Impairment or memory loss for the Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota. Meetings will take place weekly, for 10 weeks.
Qualifications
- Social Work or Therapeutic background or experience leading support groups and working with individuals with M.C.I. or Dementia
- Motivated, resourceful and dependable (ability to commit to at least one year)
- Positive and encouraging attitude and willingness to learn about others
- Good interpersonal communication skills
- Respectful of cultural diversity and possess the ability to relate to individuals of all socioeconomic backgrounds
- Open-minded
- Recognize and respond appropriately to requests
- Empathy for individuals and care partners
Position Requirements
- Individual will need or develop:
- Experienced with and sufficient knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
- Comfort with delivering educational materials that you are trained on and are developed for you.
- Familiarity with association and community disease-related resources, programs, and events.
- Be comfortable with medical terms and healthcare issues
- Awareness of community dementia related resources and events
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the Metro MN Program Manager and regional program staff if applicable.
- Begin each meeting with a welcome to group members, introductions and discussion of ground rules and meeting purpose.
- Create a safe atmosphere.
- Develop meeting time/schedule and ground rules.
- Educate and refer participants to the Association’s programs and services including Information Helpline, Care Consultation, Safe Return and Family Education.
- Provide weekly educational material possibly involving a speaker if appropriate.
- Transition to two separate support group rooms during the second hour. One for the care partners and one for the individuals with the diagnosis (highlighting that things discussed separately in groups will remain confidential. Then each facilitator prompts discussion.
- Notify the Metro MN Program Manager if there will be a change in group leadership, date/time, location, or decision to continue your group.
- Complete necessary group attendance paperwork and return to Metro MN Program Manager on a monthly basis.
- Promote the group internally and externally.

Description
The Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota has been providing services, information, and advocacy for over 30 years to people with dementia, their families and health care providers. This Chapter is one of seven founding chapters of the National Alzheimer's Association, headquartered in Chicago. It was started by family caregivers who came together around a common need of getting support and help for their loved ones with dementia. Since 1979, our donor-supported, nonprofit Alzheimer's Association has provided reliable information and care consultation; created supportive services for families; increased funding for dementia research; and influenced public policy changes.
