How do I apply to become a Visitor Programs Docent?
The first step is to submit an application that can be downloaded from our website: http://seymourcenter.ucsc.edu/get-involved/volunteer. Applications will be reviewed, and selected candidates will be contacted for an interview.
What would I be doing as a Visitor Programs Docent?
Docents serve as guides in the Seymour Center and interpret the science behind our exhibits in order to personally connect our visitors with the world’s oceans. Docents lead 45-minute public tours of the outside of our research facilities.
What are the requirements? Must be responsible, punctual, and reliable; enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds; the desire to learn and communicate marine science and conservation to the public through hands-on activities and engaging interpretation; be comfortable. Must complete Docent training from January-March 2019. Must be 18 years or older.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Dickens Project is threefold: to promote and carry out research and teaching on Charles Dickens and 19th-century literature and culture; to share its research findings with students, teachers, scholars, and members of the general public through domestic and international conferences, as well as through outreach efforts focused on the public humanities; and to professionalize the next generation of 19th-century studies scholars.

We seek volunteers to assist with our high school educational outreach programs and our annual summer conference, the Dickens Universe.

REQUIREMENTS

- Orientation or Training
- New volunteers are required to commit to one 4.25-hour shift every other week for one year. Shift times are Tuesday - Sunday (Monday - Sunday in July and August) 9:30-1:45 or 1:00-5:15.
- When and where is the training? The training course meets twice a week on Wednesday evenings (5:30-8:30 PM) and most Saturdays (10:00 AM - 3:00 PM) at the Seymour Center from January 8 - March 11, 2020.
