ORGANIZATION: Second Harvest Heartland
Please visit the new page to apply.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Agency Relations Team is responsible for maintaining relationships with a network of over 300 nonprofit and faith-based organizations (Agency Partners) who provide direct food support to people in their communities through a variety of programs including food shelves, free community meals, shelters, and others.
We are looking for a detail-oriented volunteer to help us cover the monitoring expectations associated with Agency Partners distributing food at multiple locations, such as mobile food pantries like The Sheridan Story. This volunteer will conduct in-person visits to locations where these Agency Partners are storing and distributing food and ensure that all food safety guidelines are being met. This volunteer will work in close contact to Agency Partner staff and compete brief monitoring evaluations and is an excellent opportunity to observe some of our distribution sites first-hand.
DUTIES:
- Visit partner sites and conduct brief monitoring visits.
- Write up evaluations for each site with provided template.
- Check for any potential food safety concerns (food safety training will be provided)
- Communicate effectively with Second Harvest Heartland staff about any potential concerns identified at visit. Volunteers will not be asked to discipline or communicate with any agencies that are out of compliance. If a site is not compliant, the volunteer will inform their supervisor, and the volunteer’s supervisor will work with the agency.
- Assist with scheduling to ensure a consistent flow of visits and completion of all necessary visits in a reasonable timeframe.
- Attention to detail, highly organized
- Valid driver’s license and access to personal vehicle
- Relationship-oriented and mindful of complexities of Agency Partner dynamics
- Working knowledge of Twin Cities geography and willingness to drive moderate distances across the Metro
- Project Start date: March or April 2019, as soon as possible
- Days of the week: Monday-Friday
- Time of the day: 8AM-3:30PM (varies)
- Work site: This is a remote volunteer opportunity and will be based in the community. Bi-weekly check-ins will be arranged to meet the volunteer’s schedule and convenience.

Mission Statement
The mission of Second Harvest Heartland is to end hunger through community partnerships. At Second Harvest Heartland, our volunteer partners do more than enrich our work, they ground us to our mission of ending hunger together. We integrate volunteers into all aspects of creating and delivering solutions that will free our neighbors of hunger.
Description
More than a food bank, Second Harvest Heartland is a leading partner in the policies and programs that work to end hunger, like SNAP, school meals and senior nutrition programs, and we’re an innovator in the areas where food can be the solution, like FOODRx and Minnesota Central Kitchen.
Second Harvest Heartland is a member of Feeding America, a national network of more than 200 food banks serving every state in the United States. Membership means access to millions of pounds of surplus food and grocery donations from manufacturers and producers throughout the country.
Working with our network of partners, volunteers and donors as well as people like you, our 90,000+ square feet of dry, refrigerator and freezer space is constantly accepting and distributing donations. Our fleet of trucks travels nearly half a million miles a year, picking up food donations and delivering them to local food shelves, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, senior community centers and children's after school programs. Each year we distributed more than 100 million meals to our partners in hunger-relief. Learn more at 2harvest.org.
