WISE & Healthy Aging is a multi-service, nonprofit, community-based organization serving older adults, their families and caregivers. The organization operates an early memory loss program (WISE Minds) that is predicated on a combination of physical activity, mental exercise and creative pursuits in a small group social setting. These interventions are known to foster a pathway to active and adaptive aging, can improve quality of life and help maintain independent living for older adults, as long as possible

The WISE Minds Instructor plays a critical role in the smooth functioning of each class meeting: assisting to facilitate cognitive and physical exercises, helping guide participants to and from the restrooms to avoid becoming lost, participating in the distribution of the lunch meal and snack and with all general classroom management needs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with room setup
  • Greet class participants and offer beverages throughout the day to ensure hydration
  • Partner with class instructor to facilitate class: hand-out and collect activity materials; assist participants with tasks at hand to maximize participation and mastery; chaperone participants to the restroom and community outings for safety reasons; assist in plating at lunch, deliver and cleanup; facilitate departure to ensure all participants leave with their respective transportation safely and appropriately.
  • Participate in any in service trainings to enhance knowledge base.
  • Offer programming compatible with program goals (optional)

Mission Statement

With the vision of being a trusted source on senior services, trusted expert on matters of aging, and trusted voice for seniors and caregivers, WISE & Healthy Aging's mission is to advance the dignity and quality of life of older adults through leadership, advocacy, and high-quality, innovative series.

Description

A well-respected nonprofit, community-based social services organization, headquartered in Santa Monica, CA. Leader in the field of aging for almost four 50 years, the agency is proud to receive national designation as a "Great Place to Work" as well as recognition with Guidestar's Platinum-level seal of transparency.

We serve three groups of people -- the frail elderly, caregivers of older adults, and active older adults age 50 and older (Boomers). We have the sole distinction in Los Angeles of serving seniors in both the traditional, residential community and those who are residents in long-term care facilities.

With our main office in Santa Monica, we also have regional offices for our City & County of Los Angeles Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program and Elder Abuse Prevention Program in Van Nuys, Pasadena, Montebello and Long Beach. For our Club WISE Program, we have centers in Santa Monica and Baldwin Hills. Programming focuses on keeping older adults age 50 and older active and healthy, with lifelong learning and volunteer engagement opportunities. Volunteer Club WISE instructors teach courses on fitness, health, technology, arts and humanities. Our Intergenerational Tutoring Program has volunteers paired with students in elementary schools in Central L.A. and also in the San Fernando Valley.
