ORGANIZATION: Heritage Works

Heritage Works is starting it's recruitment for our Summer Work Arts Program where we hire 50 Detroit youth between the ages of 14-24 through the GDYT (Grow Detroit Young Talent) Program. In order to get the word out about this paid work opportunity for Detroit youth this summer we host a series of recruitment events where we collect documentation from Detroit youth/young adults who might be interested in working with us and interview them for the positions available. We partner with The Wright Museum and NKSK Events + Productions in order to offer three sites for employment. The employment/work site opportunities are with our African Dance and Drum Ensemble, The Wright Museum as docents for their Camp Africa program, and NKSK Events + Productions for those interested in working in event management.

We would love volunteers to be able to help with management for these recruiting events, collecting paperwork, directing flow of potential recruits, and interviewing recruits. The recruitment events are below:

April 27th 9:30am-3:30pm @ Marygrove College
May 4th 12:30pm-3:30pm @ Boll Family YMCA
May 18th 9:30am-3:30pm @ Marygrove College

Please email theresaba@heritageworks.org if you are interested!

Mission Statement

Heritage Works promotes youth and community development through cultural traditions, arts and education.

Description

Heritage Works embraces the ancestral and cultural traditions of Detroit residents. We celebrate the beauty and humanity of African people and world cultures through music, movement, adornment, and folklore. We have provided the metro Detroit community with authentic cultural arts education and presentations since its founding in 2000.

At Heritage Works, we believe that cultural traditions provide rich resources for promoting understanding, as well as personal and artistic excellence. Our mission is to promote youth and community development through cultural arts and traditions. We accomplish our mission through two major programs: Youth Works and Community Works.

Heritage Works has the following goals and objectives:

  • To promote the well-being of youth and families, preparing them through understanding, physical health and excellence for an increasingly international and competitive world.

  • To strengthen communities, tradition bearers, and professional and recreational artists through training, performance opportunities, and the illumination and presentation of diverse art forms and traditions.

  • To develop a strong, stable and sustainable organization that contributes to the cultural richness and vitality of Metro Detroit.

  • To widen the canon of arts so that what is thought of as "fine arts" includes the expressive traditions of many cultures.
