ORGANIZATION: National Aviary in Pittsburgh

BEAK volunteers can take a variety of assignments: Birdly, Education Assistant and Krafts.

  • Birdly is our simulated flight experience which requires a Virtual Reality Operator.
  • Education Assistants travel with our educators as they present educational programming with live birds at locations around the Pittsburgh area. It’s a great way to learn about birds and conservation.
  • Kraft volunteers help children create themed crafts during special event weekends.

Days needed: Birdly and crafts: weekends, Education Assistants needed every day

Number of hours required: 2 - 4 hours per day

Specific time/ shift required: Birdly: 1:00 - 5:00 pm, Education Assistant: Varies from early morning to early evening, Crafts: 10:30 am - 3:30 pm one weekend per month.

Volunteer responsibilities:

  • Operate and facilitate guest interactions with Birdly, the National Aviary’s flight simulation experience.
  • Assist with loading and unloading birds and program materials into the vehicle.
  • Assist driver with navigation
  • Ensure safety of the birds and audience
  • Volunteers work in pairs with children of all ages to create the craft designed and prepared by the National Aviary.
  • Volunteer may run a children’s game like Simon Says or our Eggstravaganza Egg Hunt.

Qualifications:

  • Able to carry a crated bird or box of supplies (10-15 Lbs. max)
  • Must be able to use scissors, glue stick, tempera paint, paper punches etc.
  • Must enjoy working with children, have good interpersonal and communication skills.
Requirements:

Be at least 16 years old.

Have reliable and convenient internet access.

Have reliable transportation to the National Aviary.

Attend new Volunteer Orientation.

Commit to a minimum of 4 hours of service per month.

Acceptance in to the program is based on your interview, availability and compatibility of interests.

America's bird zoo is located in Pittsburgh, PA and fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The National Aviary is the only non-profit, free-standing indoor facility in the U.S. which is wholly dedicated to avian exhibition, education, conservation, and the development and practice of leading-edge avian medicine. Our diverse collection consists of approximately 500 birds of 150 species from six continents.
