The Carnegie Science Center is recruiting volunteers to help on our USS Requin submarine.

  • Visitors learn how 80 men used their expertise, humor and sheer ingenuity to carve out a rough and adventurous life during USS Requin’s (SS 481) lengthy defense and scientific missions, some of which are still classified to this day! State-of-the-art and battle ready when she set out just days before the end of World War II, Requin holds the distinction of being the Navy’s first Radar Picket submarine.
  • Volunteers help the Carnegie Science Center use this unique and wonderful artifact to teach science and history in a truly immersive (submersive!) environment. Volunteers on the submarine are instrumental in enhancing the visitors’ enjoyment of the USS Requin.

Responsibilities:

  • Educate visitors about the ship through verbal explanations, questions and answers, and presentations.

Clearances

  • Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
  • Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34).
  • Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).

  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • Minimum one 4-hour shift per week. Half or whole day shifts are available seven days a week from March 1 through November 30. Weekend and holiday hours are available from December 1 – February 28.
