Storytime

This is a brand new volunteer opportunity for our main branch offering an exciting, challenging, and rewarding role for the person.

Storytime... It's Not Just Reading to Kids. Really there is far more to this role. Please read the responsibilities and the commitment details carefully when considering if this is right for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Sets up and cleans up storytime room
  • Creates safe & welcoming atmosphere, including learning children's names, chatting with parents, and establishing rules
  • Chooses and prepares titles appropriate for audience
  • Engages children in a variety of ways - picture books, flannel boards, fingerplays, movement activities, puppets, oral storytelling, parachute, songs, and/or instruments
  • Maintains "classroom management" - establishes management structure, keeps momentum, responds to audience needs, recognizing when activity isn't working and changes direction
  • Provides extension activities such as crafts, science experiments, or guided play
  • Builds literacy capacity by giving early learning tips to parents

Public libraries in Idaho seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Background Check
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • One-on-one training - 3 hours Observation & practice in storytime - 4 sessions (commitment 9:30 - 12) Commit to running one 6-8 week session (DATE RANGE IS FLEXIBLE) / current sessions are on Tuesdays 9:30 am to 12 pm
  • Application Interview Criminal background check at library expense. Experience working with groups of children. Educational training and/or experience helpful, but not required.
