Position Title: Highmark SportsWorks Volunteer Presenter

Supervisor: Matt Needles, Education Coordinator for Highmark SportsWorks or Daily Point Person

Goal or Purpose of the Position:

  • Highmark SportsWorks at Carnegie Science Center is the largest science and sports exhibition in the world! Highmark SportsWorks offers over 40 exhibits and 60+ interactive experiences designed to challenge your mind and body. Highmark SportsWorks volunteers will help visitors climb our rock wall, navigate our ropes course, become a human yo-yo, see how fast they can sprint, and much more! If you have an interest in the science of health and sports, this is the place for you!

Responsibilities:

  • Interact with visitors
  • Provide excellent customer service
  • Learn the science of all gallery exhibits
  • Convey science messages to visitors in an upbeat, exciting way
  • Answer basic questions about Carnegie Science Center facilities and programs
  • Perform various science demonstrations (with special training)
  • Assist visitors with exhibits and safety equipment
  • Operate exhibits, with a focus on safety
  • Check for admission wristbands
  • Volunteers will not be responsible for administering first aid

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum 4-hour per week + mandatory orientation. Shifts are available 7 days a week from 10-2 and 1-5. Volunteers are required to commit to one 4-hour shift/week at the same time on the same day. Exceptions can be made with prior Supervisor consent.

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to learn and communicate science content
  • Strong presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Ability to perform demonstrations
  • Ability to handle exhibit equipment
  • Basic computer skills
  • Sense of humor
  • Eagerness to talk to visitors of all ages

Clearances

  • Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
  • Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34).
  • Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).
