This is the perfect opportunity for volunteers who only want to volunteer once a month. This meaningful opportunity occurs one Wednesday a month @ 2:45 pm. You will be reading to memory care residents and it would be one-on-one, but it most likely wouldn't be the same person every-time. Volunteers will need to complete a background check. Patience and understanding is a must!

The background-check costs $18, at the cost to the volunteer.

***If under 18+, a background check is not required but*** Not suitable for children under 6.

Benefits:
Read aloud to older adults. For older adults who loved to read, listening to someone read to them can bring profound comfort and joy.

There are many different reasons why older adults may give up reading. Common barriers include poor vision, lack of strength to hold up a book, tremors, dementia, and other medical reasons. Losing the ability to read often leaves people feeling withdrawn, sad and isolated.

By reading aloud to an older adult, you can help improve the quality of their life. Improvements include:

  • Stimulate memories and creativity
  • Improve mood and concentration
  • Increase social interaction

Mission Statement

END AGEISM, UNIFY VOICES, DISRUPT THE NORM, THINK LOCAL Age-Friendly Network Nevada began in January of 2017, after acknowledging a need for an organization to facilitate a network aimed at providing a voice for older adults; that focuses on combating ageism, social and economic insecurities and also helps develop and support organizations promoting an age friendly city. AFNN is committed to local collaboration and thinks local first.

Description

AFNN was founded after recognizing a need that wasn’t being addressed in Southern Nevada. The founder often heard many older adults say "I just want to be heard" whether through disjointed health care, in addressing their needs, and many issues affecting their lives. It became too apparent, that many of these struggles were a product of ageism. Consequently, older adults are facing economic and social issues leaving a lack of connectivity, accessibility, unification, loneliness food and work insecurities, trumped by attitudes that their voice and opinions did not matter.
