ORGANIZATION: The Arc Jacksonville

The Arc Jacksonville, Inc. is offering individuals the opportunity to complete a VISTA Summer Associateinternship working with people with intellectual and developmental differences (I/DD). Interns in these positions will be working directly with clients in one of three positions: 1) mentoring young adults with I/DD living in dorm style apartments in an effort to develop skills to live more independently, 2) teaching the culinary arts to adults with I/DD under the supervision of an instructor, or 3) providing support and training to adults with I/DD living independently.

These internships are full-time (40 hrs/week with some evenings and weekends) from June 3, 2019 to August 4, 2019 through the National Service Corps. Interns receive a small stipend to defer their expenses (total of $2,125 paid out biweekly during service) and a Segal Education financial aid award of $1,289 at the completion of service that can be used for future enrollment in college or to pay toward existing student loans. Students may learn more by completing an "interest form" online at https://goo.gl/forms/DP3S4uaHmtm8dsbD3 or may apply directly at https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?id=64628&fromSearch=true. If you have questions, you may submit them through the "interest form" site and we will respond promptly.

We have 22 internship positions located in the area surrounding the University of North Florida.

About The Arc Jacksonville

Location:

1050 N. Davis St., Jacksonville, FL 33309, US

Mission Statement

to serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential and to participate in community life.

Description

The Arc Jacksonville has served our community’s citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1965. The organization began within a grassroots movement to provide educational opportunities for special needs persons who were not well-served by the public education system. Over the decades, The Arc program has evolved and expanded to offer a wide range of services today within community settings.

Today The Arc has an annual operating budget of $7.6 million, serves approximately 400 individuals daily and provides employment for approximately 130 staff members as well as service opportunities for 24 AmeriCorps and 6 VISTA members. Services are rendered from three main locations and five group homes. In addition to the direct services provided through our programs, The Arc Jacksonville serves as a source of information and support for the entire Northeast Florida area through its advocacy program, called A.S.K. (Advocacy, Support and Knowledge).

The primary location of the agency is in downtown Jacksonville, in a multi-use complex of administrative offices, program and workshop areas and a packaging warehouse. An additional facility on the Westside provides similar programming.

The five group homes are nestled within the neighborhoods of Arlington, St. Nicholas, Ortega Farms and Mandarin. A college program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities is on the campus of the University of North Florida.
