Older Adults: Impact & inspire the next generation
ORGANIZATION: RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program) of Washtenaw County
Please visit the new page to apply.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers to serve as literacy tutors at a summer camp for youth. Opportunity starts in June.
Purpose: Help kids build their vocabulary and reading comprehension over the summer so they do not forget what they learned between school years. Help them build self-confidence and positive relationships with adults.
Qualifications: Looking for someone patient who enjoys working with kids in grades 2-5, can pass a background check, and has their own vehicle for transportation. Tutors do not need teaching experience-- tutor training is provided for reading and math tutors.
Training: Volunteers must attend a training in June before they start working with the kids. This training prepares volunteers with skills for one-to-one tutoring. Refresher and special topic workshops are also offered. Academic Director and Reading Specialists provide ongoing support to volunteers.
Timeframe: Volunteers are needed on a weekly basis between June-August. Pick a one hour time slot on a weekday morning between 8am-11am. Substitute tutors are available to cover for vacations and special occasions with advanced notice.
Continue on to volunteering with the after school program in September if you choose. Schedule is completely up to you and the family you are matched with. Time off is always flexible with advanced notice.
Location of work: The tutoring sites are in Ann Arbor Public Schools and Community Center locations in Ypsilanti.
