Minds Matter Chicago

Minds Matter Chicago (est. 2006) established it’s Associate Board in 2010 to oversee the organization’s fundraising efforts. As the organization has grown over the years, the Associate Board has developed as a young professional leadership group with three different committees dedicated to the different fundraising divisions: Corporate Fundraising, Events, Engagement. Members are expected to bring engagement and leverage professional connections to expand the MM network. Along with this meaningful contribution to the mission of Minds Matter, members can expect to expand their own networks and develop valuable leadership skills.

Give/Get Pledge: AB members are expected to give and/or raise at least $500/year through event ticket sales or sponsorships, procuring silent auction items, and/or contributions from friends and family

Role and Responsibilities:

All Committee Members:

  • Attend and participate in monthly associate board calls
  • Attend and participate in monthly (weekly during busy seasons) committee calls
  • Support other committee members with project execution
  • Collaborate and promote efforts of the other committees
  • Work in tandem with other parts of the organization, including marketing, program management, finance and the board of directors
  • Market events to your network and pursue a corporate sponsorship of MM with your current employer

Corporate Committee Member Specific:

  • Initiate discussions with employer about Corporate Giving Policy (if applicable)
  • Serve as lead ambassador for at least three existing corporate partners, involving:
    • Conducting regular communications and updates about our programming
    • Pitching sponsorship opportunities and other channels of support
    • Providing sponsors with acknowledgements and transparency
  • Generate leads for potential new corporate partnerships

Events Committee Member Specific:

  • Collect data on event vendors and in-kind donations
  • Act as a point of contact for potential event vendors (Including finding appropriate space for annual gala, food and beverage vendors and donations, and other event specific items)
  • Collaborate and strategize with team members on event planning
  • Create actionable marketing and event plans to ensure appropriate messaging, on-schedule delivery, and communications for all events
  • Assist in the execution of the events on event day
  • Develop event proposals and potentially lead an event over the course of the year as appropriate

Engagement Committee Member Specific:

  • Help lead volunteer engagement initiatives over the course of the year
  • Assist in the execution of fundraisers on event day
  • Serve as the associate board liaison to alumni and volunteers
  • Engage and communicate ongoing initiatives to the organization
  • Update quarterly MMC newsletter and maintain volunteer rewards system
  • *Potential to plan engagement and fundraising events

Time Commitment:

  • This position requires a minimum one year commitment
  • This role requires an average of 2-4 hours per week
  • Calls/virtual meetings are typically conducted on weekdays after normal work hours

Background/Skills Required:

  • A passion for advancing equity in education and positive youth development
  • Ability to communicate professionally via email and presentations
  • Strong team player
  • Experience with fundraising, sales, or other client-facing duties is a plus
  • Additional skill and experience in marketing, finance, accounting, design, data management and analysis, and communications will be viewed favorably
  • No previous volunteer or board experience is required

Mission Statement

Minds Matter of Chicago is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Our mission is to connect driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.


Our goal is to provide these high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with perspective on why attending college is important, SAT/ACT test preparation courses, assistance in navigating the financial aid process and support for their decision to make academic achievement a priority. Minds Matter was established in Chicago in April 2006, and in 2021 is serving 59 students and 184 student-alumni.
