Refugees Northwest is a program of Lutheran Community Services Northwest and we believe that every person forced to flee war, persecution and terror can heal, thrive and enrich our community with their unique gifts and strengths. We work with thousands of refugees and asylum-seekers each year to build upon the strength and courage that got them here, and to support their hopes and dreams.
Our Elder Refugee Program meets weekly and provides elders the opportunity to prepare for the naturalization exam and learn to navigate new systems while building English communication skills and a strong sense of community.
As a Talk Time Facilitator, you will provide a safe learning environment for elder refugees to practice their English speaking and listening skills while they learn about topics for the naturalization exam and how to navigate different health and social services systems throughout King County. You will work with a group of 4-5 elders to foster conversation with the assistance of a topic guide each week. We'll provide you with Talk Time facilitation training as well as additional resources for working with English language learners.
Volunteers will play an important role in fostering strong relationships and supporting elder refugees as they navigate a new culture and learn a new language. The majority of the elders we work with have been in the U.S. less than 6 years and you will be an important link for them to learn about American culture and history while assisting them with important language skills acquisition.
