Brighten a day! Read aloud to bed-bound dementia residents!

At The Julia Temple Healthcare Center, we have over 100 dementia and alzheimer's residents in our care. Most of them get no visits from outside friends or family, especially as their disease progresses and they become non-responsive and bed-bound. Therefore, we are looking for volunteers to come once a week (or more!) to Julia Temple and read aloud to our bed-bound residents. As a reading volunteer, you will be assigned to 3-4 residents, and when you come in to volunteer, you will take your reading material from room to room, spending 15-20 minutes reading by the bedside of each resident. You can bring your own material (novels, poetry, non-fiction, etc.) or use books we have at the center. If you would like to read the Bible, we also have residents who would love that, though that of course is not required. Research shows that having a live voice read aloud or talk to them stimulates these residents' minds, so even though they may not be able to express their thanks, you can know that you are definitely making a difference with each visit!
