We are always recruiting for our Refugee Sewing program! This exciting program will be revitalized with brand new curriculum and a new cohort this January! Your support will make a huge impact on these women. Our curriculum ranges from the basics, to repairs and alterations, and even a partnership with Cotopaxi. This program has incredible room for growth, and we hope you will become part of our community!

The ideal volunteer will be experienced with the basics of sewing and using a sewing machine or serger. Volunteers will receive an orientation on the curriculum to ensure uniformity of projects and knowledge.

It will be the volunteer's duty to; sign up for class beforehand using an electronic sign up sheet, come to class prepared-having looked over the planned materials for that day, communicate with other volunteers as needed, and keep an open-minded, empathetic attitude.

Thank you in advance for your interest in our Sewing program! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Mission Statement

The Utah Refugee Education and Training Center is a partnership between Salt Lake Community College, Utah State University and the Utah Department of Workforce Services. This partnership facilitates employment training and access to academic achievement -- making a real difference by helping families reach a sustainable wage

As part of the Department of Workforce Service, the Utah Refugee Education and Training Center is implementing tech-related programs for refugees that will enhance their ability to secure tech-related jobs, e ducational opportunities for refugees and other underrepresented communities in Utah. We leverage skill-based volunteerism as well as targeted in-kind and financial donations to provide free training and tech certification pathways for qualified applicants who otherwise would not have access to these opportunities. We target individuals with demonstrated financial need, interest in tech fields, a strong desire for self-improvement and a history of community engagement. Our methodology centers around using info-graphic materials to distil information; facilitated group dialogue; and hands-on projects that nurture the inherent curiosity, self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills of participants.
