CHILDREN’S PROGRAM VOLUNTEER POSITION

Do you enjoy working with young children? Become a Children’s Program Volunteer and enhance the museum experience for our youngest visitors and their caregivers at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)!

The Early Childhood Education Initiative supports the understanding and development of each child’s healthy racial identity, their joy in human diversity and inclusion, their sense of justice, and their capacity to act for their own and others’ fair treatment. Volunteers will contribute to this mission by assisting with children’s programs that include music performances, story times, infant and toddler programs, community and family events, hands-on and craft activities and more.

While each program will be led by an NMAAHC Education staff member, there are several roles that a volunteer can have in making children’s programs at NMAAHC memorable and meaningful. CP Volunteers may:

  • Greet families and make them feel welcome in our museum.
  • Check-in registered program attendees.
  • Assist in wayfinding to program spaces, galleries and restrooms.
  • Accompany groups moving through the museum in gallery-based programs.
  • Set up and break down program space.
  • Prepare materials for activities and ensure they are stocked throughout the program.
  • Work with children to complete art projects and program activities.
  • Engage children and caregivers in positive, encouraging and meaningful conversations about program content and activities.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Previous experience in working with diverse families, students, and/or children, ages 0 to 8, in an educational or community-based environment.
  • Commitment to implementing anti-bias education programs in a museum environment in age appropriate ways.
  • Have an interest in working in history and early childhood education.
  • Foreign language skills are helpful but not required.

All abilities are welcome. We have different roles available for individuals based on their physical abilities.

  • Background check is required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Required trainings led by museum professionals.

SCHEDULING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Most programs take place weekday mornings and early afternoons. (Tuesday through Thursday, 10am to 12pm, First Saturday programs monthly, occasional Saturday signature events).

About Smithsonian's, National Museum of African American History and Culture

Location:

1400 Constitution Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20560, US

Mission Statement

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture.

Description

The National Museum of African American History and Culture was established by Act of Congress in 2003, following decades of efforts to promote and highlight the contributions of African Americans. The Museum opened to the public on September 24, 2016, as the 19th and newest museum of the Smithsonian Institution.

There are four pillars upon which the NMAAHC stands:

  1. It provides an opportunity for those who are interested in African American culture to explore and revel in this history through interactive exhibitions
  2. It helps all Americans see how their stories, their histories, and their cultures are shaped and informed by global influences
  3. It explores what it means to be an American and share how American values like resiliency, optimism, and spirituality are reflected in African American history and culture
  4. It serves as a place of collaboration that reaches beyond Washington, D.C. to engage new audiences and to work with the myriad of museums and educational institutions that have explored and preserved this important history well before this museum was created.

The NMAAHC is a public institution open to all, where anyone is welcome to participate, collaborate, and learn more about African American history and culture. In the words of Lonnie G. Bunch III, founding director of the Museum, "there are few things as powerful and as important as a people, as a nation that is steeped in its history."
