Spend some quality time reading with a child. Did you know that 80% of low-income elementary school students are not reading proficiently? You can help by volunteering to read with a child one hour a week.
Renfro Reading Buddies spend one-on-one time with elementary students reading, playing games, and teaching new literacy skills. The reading sessions are relaxed and fun. By working together, you can help give a child the vital skills they need to read, grow, and succeed. We prepare the lesson plan and activities. You just come build confidence, encourage, and have fun!
This meets the volunteer hours that many high school or college students need for their specific programs.
Volunteers that are Minorities are in high demand.

Mission Statement
Doing the heavy lifting in encouraging students to take steps toward "Learning Superhero" status - in other words, making strides in academic performance - has been community volunteers. These tutors, ranging in age from college students to seniors, work with youngsters either on a one-on-one basis or in small groups in reading or math. Renfro Elementary School continues to seek community members to join its team of tutors. Renfro Elementary student pledge: Today I will do my best to be the best. What I do today will make a difference. I will be respectful, responsible and safe in all of my actions. I will have a Marvelous Monday, Terrific Tuesday, Wonderful Wednesday, Thoughtful Thursday, and Fabulous Friday at Renfro School. Our school desires to teach the whole child. We celebrate diversity and desire to implement programs that provide opportunities for exposure to various races, cultures, and ability levels.

Public Elementary School.
A focal point for our volunteer opportunity efforts is closing Renfro's achievement gap , the disparity in educational achievement among groups of students along economic, racial/ethnic or gender lines. Statistically speaking, students of color and those from economically stressed households lag behind their classmates in standardized test scores and graduation rates.
