The United Way of Brevard is seeking volunteers to assist our community in addressing early grade reading needs associated with our youth. The ability to read is essential to childhood development because it helps improve academic success and positively affects life. Research has shown that students who do not learn to read in the first few grades are likely to repeat those grades or drop out. The United Way’s community impact priorities centers around improving early grade reading and youth health. By providing volunteers and mentors to partner with Brevard Public Schools, Community-Based, and Faith-Based programs to share their passion for reading and health with our youth helps prevent the reading loss associated with the "summer slide" while also teaching kids the importance of health and fitness in education. If you have a passion for reading and seek to share that passion with the young impressionable minds in our local schools, we need you on our team. Many people seek ways to give back to their communities, however, some are challenged by understanding what the community needs are and how they can help. The opportunity for you to do what you love and inspire others to seeks that same desire for reading could not have come in a more formal way.
In our after-school mentoring program, volunteers will have the opportunity to share their passion for reading, STEM or Science-Technology-Engineering-Math, health, dental or any other passion that you have that could help improve early grade reading for our youth. Learning to read is not just about reciting words on a page, we want our youth to be able to comprehend what they read to further their development. If you are interest in volunteering your time please fill out the required information so we can pair you up with a local school, an after-school program, or a community-based summer program that will support our early grade reading initiatives. Sign up as a Summer Reading Mentor at https://online.uwbrevard.org/servlet/eAndar.AgOpList?Update_769=Y. If you should have any questions pertaining to this request please contact Kevin C. James at email@example.com or call (321) 615-3384.
