Mission Statement

English At Large is a nonprofit that provides individual and small group instruction through a volunteer network to adult immigrants and other newcomers who want to acquire English language skills as they adapt to life in the United States. Our vision is that newcomers to the United States will develop the langauge skills and cultural knowledge needed to fully engage in their communities and fulfill their life goals.

Description

A small organization with a big impact!

Lexington resident Mildred Gilman founded English At Large in 1970 as a volunteer-based organization. Since then, the organization has grown to serve 21 communities and has helped more than 10,000 local adult learners. Supported by a small professional staff, hundreds of trained volunteers deliver our five programs: one-to-one English tutoring, group conversation practice, basic English and citizenship classes, and online learning.

Our tutors receive training and ongoing support. They deliver customized individual and small-group instruction targeted to each student's goals. They come from an array of backgrounds, and they share a commitment to student success.

Other volunteers work in the office, write learner success stories, help with fundraising and serve on our board and committees.

Our students come from around the world. Their ambitions are varied. Their accomplishments are real. They are gaining citizenship, finding work, and reading a book in English to a child for the first time. They are changing their lives.

Our supporters make everything possible. They include Massachusetts Department of Education, Acton-Boxborough United Way, Lenny Zakim Fund, Cummings Foundation and an array of businesses, associations, and individual contributors.
