We are looking for a male volunteer to mentor a 19-year-old unaccompanied refugee youth from Myanmar (Burma). This youth was placed in one of our refugee foster care group homes in the winter of 2017. He currently lives in our Independent Living Plus home with several other refugee youth. In his mentoring referral, his case manager shared the following: The youth is a strong, self-motivated individual who desires to succeed. He desires to have as many supports as he can while he is still in the Bethany program to prepare him for future success. He is on somewhat of a fast-track in the program as he entered immediately before his 18 th birthday. He hopes to graduate from high school before completing the program but continues to desire to develop his English language skills and abilities in order to do so. He appears to enjoy school and learning. He is fairly quiet in the home, preferring to generally keep to himself. He feels strongly about having a mentor. He looks forward to having someone to spend time with to learn more about community activities and resources and develop his independent living skills. This youth is Rohingya, part of a minority Muslim group in Myanmar which has experienced severe persecution and oppression in the course of the last decade. This youth fled during a violent raid on his village and was able to escape to Malaysia and then Thailand, although he experienced trauma and severe illness during his journey.
