We are a student group from San Jose State University and are looking for 10-12 volunteers on Sunday March 24th to help plant California native plants and trees in the parking lot planter beds and peripheral areas. This will be a half-day event (9am - 1pm followed by lunch) and we will need help digging holes, placing the plants, and spreading mulch. If you have gardening tools available (shovels, rakes, or trowels), please bring them as they will be put to good use.

We have teamed up with Shri Ram Chandra Mission for a Community Action Project in our class titled Global Climate Change. Our goal is to calculate climate change mitigation, as well as additional ecological benefits, while working with and helping members of a community. We will be calculating the Carbon Dioxide uptake of these plants as well as calculating water savings due to installing a new drip system to water the plants.

As a result of helping us with our project, the area surrounding the mission will have many improvements. These include:

-Native plants will attract pollinators helping the local ecosystem flourish.

-Reduced summer time parking lot temperatures.

-Monetary savings on water with reduction use from drip irrigation.

-Aesthetic improvement to parking lot with plants, trees and flowers.

-Participants will have the opportunity to learn about climate change mitigation and native plants.

-Creating an environment outside the mission that is comfortable, beautiful, and conducive to wildlife.

Any inquiries can be sent to robert.thomas@sjsu.edu or patrick.peak@sjsu.edu Those who are willing and have tools available, please note the items in the email so we can plan accordingly.
