ORGANIZATION: Literacy Network

Fall Semester Application Deadline is July 21, 2019 and our fall Semester runs Sept 9-Dec 14.
Stipend: Successful interns receive $600 as well as a letter of recommendation from Literacy Network

This internship is a great way to sharpen your managerial, organizational or communication skills while helping others. Our Skills in Computers and Literacy for Employment (SCALE) program interns oversee a weekly group tutoring session that provides one-to-one tutoring for local adults hoping to build writing, reading, and basic computer literacy skills (email, Word, Excel, basic Internet usage, etc). You will be supervising one weekly 2-hour session that contains up to 8 student/volunteer tutor pairs. Training and ongoing support are provided. Lessons you create using our educational library will help tutors teach their adult students valuable employability skills. We hire interns for each of the following sessions (be sure to indicate for which you are applying):

  • Tuesday nights, 6:00-8:00pm at Hawthorne Library (2707 E. Washington Ave.)
  • Tuesday nights, 6:00-8:00pm at Seven Oaks (1108 Moorland Rd)
  • Wednesday mornings, 10:30am-12:30pm at Literacy Network (701 Dane St.)
  • Thursday nights, 6:00-8:00pm at Literacy Network (701 Dane St.)
  • Thursday nights, 6:00-8:00pm at Meadowridge Library (5726 Raymond Rd)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Write 8 personalized, meaningful, goal-based lesson plans for each student in your session.
  • Make reminder phone calls to students.
  • Provide support to your tutors during lessons.
  • Tutor individually when needed.
  • Collect and report student, tutor, and attendance data in a timely manner.
  • Manage the tutoring site (arrange room, set up computer workstations, return materials to library after session).
  • Provide computer technology assistance when needed.

Qualifications and Commitment

  • Ideal interns will have experience and/or training in lesson planning and instruction for adult learners. Interns must be able to teach basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, internet and email.
  • Attend Intern Training two weeks prior to semester start.
  • Commit to working 8-10 hours weekly (no absences) the entire semester.
  • Attendance at all weekly sessions during the semester is required, with 6-8 additional hours each week creating lesson plans at Literacy Network during business hours.

Description

Literacy Network assists adults in Dane County who are low-income and who need help improving their literacy skills, whether they are immigrants/refugees learning English, adults reading/writing below a 5th grade level, or folks studying to pass their GED or high school equivalency exam. We offer free group classes and trained volunteer tutors at locations throughout the Madison area. Programs operate on a three semester schedule: spring, summer, and fall, and we recruit interns and tutors every semester.
