Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

About the program: Kindergartners learned how plants flourish with Zinnia’s Flower Garden by Monica Wellington, the story of a girl who’s excited to plant her seeds and watch them grow. Along with chaperones and the author, the class will visit Brooklyn Botanical Garden to get a closer look at all kinds of plant life.

Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula and meet Common Core Learning Standards, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they teach a genre of writing and guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book. BtB programs have a successful record of building comprehension skills and motivating engaged readers at schools around the city.
