Mission Statement

Appalachian Wildlife Refuge coordinates the needs of wildlife rehabilitation in Western North Carolina providing care for injured and orphaned wildlife, support for the wildlife rehabilitation network and conservation education to the community.

Description

Appalachian Wild was formed in 2014 to help with the increasing number of native wild animals in crisis in our region. Partnering with local home-based wildlife rehabilitators and specialized facilities, the organization provides rescue, triage, transport and education. In 2017, a building was donated, repaired and renovated to become the emergency room for our native wildlife. The facility opened in July of 2018 and is expected to serve over 2,000 animals annually. The organization is a community resource to help our native wildlife and give them a second chance at life in the wild.

The organization also manages the Wands for Wildlife (r) recycling program. Started in March of 2017, the program has been a global sensation after going viral on social media. Through the program, old mascara wands are recycled and used to remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of wild animals. They work great because the bristles are close together. With wands from around the world, Appalachian Wild is not only helping the animals in Western North Carolina, but also throughout the state and beyond. 'Wandraisers' are providing wands, supplies and donations to Appalachian Wild as well as the local network of wildlife rehabilitators. The program is also connecting people around the world with those helping wild animals and doing wildlife rehabilitation in their region.
