EDUCATION VOLUNTEER OVERVIEW
Education volunteers work with the Education staff to deliver high quality programming to support the institution’s educational mission. Volunteers assist with the delivery of the 9/11 Memorial Art Cart-an age-appropriate program for visitors with children. The volunteer commits to working one morning weekday for nine weeks during the summer (June 22 to August 21; no programs July 3).
9/11 MEMORIAL ART CART: ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS
The 9/11 Memorial Art Cart: Activities for Kids will launch this summer, with the aim of making the educational programs for intergenerational audiences accessible on the Memorial. Participating families can choose one of four different themed self-guided explorations, through which they learn about the 9/11 Memorial and World Trade Center. Following the self-guided exploration, they can choose to participate in a related art or science extension activity, such as making a sun print or a tribute flower.
DETAILS
Dates: Monday, June 22 - Friday, August 21, 2020 (no programs July 3)
Hours: Thursdays or Fridays, 9:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Requirements: Volunteers must commit to working all nine Thursdays, or all nine Fridays, during this time period
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with the delivery of programs for children and their caregivers visiting the Memorial
- Approach potential participants on the Memorial and provide an introduction or overview of the program or activities being offered
- Assist with signing in and out of education materials
- Use age-appropriate language to introduce the self-guided explorations and activities, and make connections to the history of 9/11 and the World Trade Center
- Give step-by-step directions for art or science activities
- Ensure that all content delivered to visitors is accurate and age-appropriate
- Assist with set-up and clean-up of program
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of and experience with education concepts, pedagogy, and best museum education practices.

Description
The 9/11 Memorial is located at the site of the former World Trade Center complex in lower Manhattan, and occupies approximately half of the 16-acre site. The 9/11 Memorial features two enormous waterfalls and reflecting pools, each about an acre in size, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers.
The National September 11 Memorial Museum is the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring 9/11’s continuing significance. Located at the bedrock/foundation level of the Twin Towers, the Museum is a moving tribute to the events of September 11 th .
