Most St. Paul storm drains lead directly to the river. Think of all those things that go down the drain after it rains or snow melts: trash, oil, road salt, and cigarette butts are all being carried into our river in large amounts.
But there is a way to help! Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) works with groups to stencil storm drains with the message "Keep em' clean... Drains to River" and distribute educational flyers to local homes to help spread the word and keep runoff pollutants out of our river. It's a great way to get outside and help the river and is an excellent fit for groups looking for a fun, outdoor team-building experience with immediate results.
For groups smaller than 20, check out a stenciling kit and work with us to plan your own stenciling outing. FMR supplies bins mid-April through mid-October (weather permitting). Stenciling must take place within St. Paul city limits.

Mission Statement
Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) engages people to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region.
Description
Friends of the Mississippi River is proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers annually.
We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events especially in need of volunteers here on VolunteerMatch.com, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at www.fmr.org/events.
Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
