Love to make a joyful noise? How about singing old hymns with a hospice patient who has dementia? Many dementia patients respond to music that they heard in their early years, and many spent those early years singing hymns in church. Here's where you come in. You sit with the patient and sing standards like "Amazing Grace" or "Jesus Loves Me" and see what happens next. A patient who may be mostly nonverbal might mouth the words or even sing along with you. It's quite a moving experience, and it makes a positive difference in their lives -- and in yours. Brookdale Hospice volunteers receive special training to provide support to hospice patients and their families at end of life. Serious inquiries only: must be able to pass a drug screen, background check and two-step TB test.... and make a joyful noise.

Mission Statement

Enriching the lives of those we serve with compassion, respect, excellence and integrity.

Description

The philosophy at Brookdale Hospice is that life is much more than physical health; it also includes the health of the human spirit. When physical health begins to fail, the nurturing of the spirit becomes critical for maintaining the dignity of the individual.

Volunteers are an important part of our hospice team, filling roles that include direct contact with patients and clerical support. Medicare requires the utilization of volunteers alongside paid clinical and administrative staff. Hospice volunteers describe their work as gratifying, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally meaningful. We value our volunteers greatly.
