What is a Court Navigator?

Court Navigators are trained volunteers who provide non-legal support to unrepresented litigants. Court Navigators gain real-world experience by interacting with judges and attorneys to address the needs of people who come to court without a lawyer.

If your goal is to help people in need, make new contacts, learn how to assist a person in court or develop professional skills -- the Court Navigator Program will set the stage!

How can a Court Navigator help?

Court Navigators can assist unrepresented litigants by:

· Explaining what to expect in the courtroom and the roles of court employees,

· Providing moral support,

· Finding and completing court forms,

· Finding an interpreter,

· Assisting with the Do-It-Yourself Form programs,

· Sharing information about available resources.

What can a Court Navigator expect?

· Volunteers must attend a four hour training seminar.

· Volunteers will receive a training manual and on-site orientation.

· Volunteers may be trained at their school or local courthouse.

· College students may use this opportunity to fulfill a community service requirement or receive academic credit.

· All participants will receive a Certificate of Recognition upon completing fifty (50) hours of service.

· Volunteers will have flexibility with their schedule.

Where can a Court Navigator volunteer?

· All five counties in New York City (Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, and Richmond)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Office for Justice Initiatives (OJI) is to ensure meaningful access to justice for those passing through the doors of every New York State civil, criminal and family court - regardless of income, background or special need, in accordance with NYS Chief Judge Janet DiFiore’s Excellence Initiative.

Description

The OJI was established in July 2017 to provide leadership and oversight for NYS’s Unified Court System justice-based initiatives, including the pre-existing Access to Justice Program. We continue to use every resource developed by the Access to Justice Program, including pro bono programs, self-help services, and technological tools and outreach programs throughout New York State’s 62 counties. Our existing programs include:
-Community outreach efforts;
-CourtHelp website designed specifically to help litigants obtain easy-to-understand legal and procedural information as well as instructions for managing their court cases;
-Court Navigators to assist unrepresented litigants in housing and consumer debt cases;
-Do-It-Yourself forms, programs and technology initiatives;
-Help Centers located in courts throughout the state where litigants receive free legal information and assistance to navigate the court system without a lawyer; and
-Volunteer Attorney and other volunteer programs to provide legal information, advice and representation for those disadvantaged by income, age or disability.
