Come make and design with MCD in San Mateo! Give visitors some hands-on guidance to combine multiple colors of wool roving into a tuft and place into a plastic egg to shake, shake, shake, shake! Cracking open the egg will produce a felted wool sphere that looks just like an imaginary planet. Assist guests in stringing the planet on a cord to take home.

Get the chance to find your next inspiration on a journey through the eccentric and profound creations of brilliant hackers, inventors and entrepreneurs at the 14th Annual Maker Faire Bay Area. Volunteers will have the chance to view other projects, presenters, and hands-on activities, from robotics and AI to mechanical art, culinary innovation, and more.

MCD seeks volunteers who are comfortable instructing and giving hands-on assistance to a diverse group of attendees of all ages.

Mission Statement

Through inspired exhibitions and experiential programs, MCD explores the creative process and current perspectives in craft and design.

Description

Vision:

The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) makes creativity accessible to everyone.

MCD’s exhibitions and programs:

- Illuminate the creative process
- Question the conventional notion of art
- Inspire awe and spark curiosity
- Invite participation and collaboration
- Champion designers, makers, artists and risk-takers

MCD is the only San Francisco museum devoted exclusively to craft and design. Exhibitions present innovative craft and design in varied media, with interpretation and programs focusing on process and hands-on experiences. Since the museum's founding in 2004, MCD has dynamically brought arts programming outside of the museum walls and into community settings, engaging public events and spaces with a range of ideas, materials and processes.
