When we finished our current 3-year strategic plan in April 2018 (see it on our website www.nnrg.org in the About section), we agreed that we needed to diversify our sources of revenue. We set as a goal to increase our annual individual and corporate donations from $5,600 to $17,000 and meet or exceed that total going forward.

During 2018 we thought about the different ways that we could achieve that target. Our Executive Director is already responsible for writing grant applications to foundations and state and federal government programs. He also oversees the profitability of our forestry program services, which bring in over half of our revenues. Historically the NNRG Board was not responsible for soliciting or providing donations. In 2016, the Board voted to require a donation from every Board Member and we have met that 100% giving goal ever since.

In November, 2018, each board member took on a small experiment in fundraising that was of interest to them. For example, one board member is trying to find a corporate sponsor for one issue of our newsletter--$750. Each of us is working on our idea and bringing our results to a "support group" composed of 3 directors, and reporting quarterly to the entire board.

I believe that our board and organization would benefit from having at least two new directors who are skilled at fundraising to raise the competence of the board as a whole and to help us focus on approaches to development that are aligned with our values and brand. We're hoping to gain visibility for NNRG both within and outside the forest-owning, forestry professional community. I think that two board members who know each other, or who are interested in working with another professional would be ideal. We are a fun and dedicated group of people.

Mission Statement

Mission: We strengthen the ecological and economic vitality of Northwest forests and communities by connecting people with the knowledge, skills, and markets they need to steward their land.

Description

We specialize in helping private landowners steward their forests instead of clear cutting or neglecting them. Our clients are families, community forests, nature camps, tribes, land trusts, and municipalities. We are the best listeners available at any price. We provide some of the best advice and custom services from preliminary walk-thrus to large ecological thinning operations. The Nature Conservancy has entrusted 25,000 acres with us. Some of our clients have only 10 acres. Most are members of a group FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certificate program (sort of like organic for trees). We currently help manage 160,000 acres in WA and OR.

Through our programs, we work to achieve three primary objectives:

  1. Provide access to the tools and information that landowners need to sustainably manage their forests.
  2. Improve the economics of sustainable forest management so that all landowners can secure the financial resources to steward their land, and consumers can help restore forests with their purchases.
  3. Empower communities of forest owners and businesses to work together and champion the cause of ecological forestry.
