Becoming a Hospice Hero
What the committment entails

Do you have a talent to share?

A contagious passion for just about anything?

Would you like an appreciative audience?

Want an easy way to make a big impact in someone's life?

Join our team of upbeat, big-hearted individuals dedicated to bringing peace to those with terminal illnesses at Southwest Medical Hospice.

Now that COVID-19 is part of our lives, we are reaching out to our patients and families in-home OR from a distance (virtually) based on your personal comfort level. We also supply our volunteers with masks and other forms of PPE.

Our volunteers are welcomed as respected members of the care team, whether they have a desire to help from a distance with assembling patient packets and/or bereavement mailers; walking a patient's dog; gardening; helping patients write letters, singing/reading to them; offering a friendly ear, or placing a telephone call.

We are also interested in working with aromatherapists, stylist/barbers, massage/Reiki therapists, musicians/vocalists, I/tech, and those with registered support animals willing to share their calm, gentle pets with a nurturing visit to our patients.

Currently, training is done virtually but several members of our staff will join you online for a few minutes to say hello, make sure you feel comfortable, and known. Training is informative, easy, and fun. It is designed to give volunteers the tools to be confident working with our patients and can be completed within one day. Mileage reimbursement is also offered for volunteer travel.

Death can actually be a beautiful process, given the right circumstances. Having the gift of foresight that the end of their life is near, many patients are able to make peace with their life story. Those who are in the process of dying have a unique perspective on what it means to be alive. We want to help them find significance in every moment they still have. We take our mission seriously, but we also create meaning and even have fun while partnering with our patients and their caregivers on their journey.

As your Volunteer Management Team, we look forward to helping you add a meaningful, rewarding facet to your life!
