Amethyst Place is a recovery housing program for women (overcoming substance use disorder) and their children. While schools are holding class at least partly online, we've set up a space for kids to come do their online learning with support from teachers and volunteers. Each child has their own schedule of when to be online, what homework to do, etc and many of them need help sticking to that schedule, finishing tasks, etc. Our teachers are great but need help to give each child individual attention as much as they might want/need.
We're looking for several MASKED volunteers to help keep kids focused, maybe do some tutoring or homework help, cheerlead them through a project or watch them for outdoor activity time. If you're comfortable helping in person, our kids are in grades K-10 and are all asked to wear masks inside. Most need help with reading and math in general but may also have more particular needs (for example, if you're bilingual, we have a student who speaks primarily Spanish with his family and is struggling with learning English on top of his regular school challenges). For added safety, we're doing temperature checks, providing hand sanitizer and lots of hand washing opportunities.
Kids are with us from 7:30 am - 3:30 pm Monday - Friday, so we're asking for volunteers to come for at least 2 hours (but you're welcome to do more) at least one day per week and make it a recurring shift the same day/time for the remainder of the semester to build consistency and trust with the students. Typically there are more opportunities for one-on-one homework help, task management, tutoring, etc in the mornings and more outdoor play time in the afternoons, but every student's schedule is different. Lunch is typically served around 11 am, so a great morning shift is 8-11 am and afternoon shifts can be as early as 11. More scheduling details will be discussed after your online orientation has been completed.
Experience with kids, as a teacher or tutor is great but not necessary.

Description
Founded in 2000, we provide housing in a safe environment (secured apartment complex) so that moms have a stable home to be reunited with their children. On site therapists help both moms and kids learn to be a family, communicate in healthier ways, develop routines & learn the life skills that will help them succeed for years to come. Education is a major focus for both moms and children with tutors and mentors provided for everything from a GED through a college degree.
