The Palo Alto Public Art Program is hiring a 2019 summer intern! The paid internship program allows students and emerging arts professionals to investigate and participate in a combination of hands-on learning experiences and structured projects, becoming an integral part of the team. This opportunity is open to all enthusiastic individuals interested in public art and arts administration, as well as undergraduate and graduate students seeking to gain on-the-job experience. The internship is expected to commence during the summer months, approx. May - August 2019. The internship program allows students and emerging arts professionals to investigate and participate in the operations of the City of Palo Alto's thriving Public Art Program. Through a combination of hands-on learning experiences and structured projects, interns become an integral part of the team. Interns are expected to participate in daily activities, contribute skills and ideas, and interact with artists, city staff and community members. Essential Duties: Successful candidates may choose to take on projects from a multitude of administrative capacities including the development of educational or mapping tools for the outdoor collection, assisting in the implementation of temporary public art installations, marketing and social media efforts, community engagement events, and other creative place making efforts. Some other projects may include:

  • Assist in the planning and development for Code:ART2, a new media festival that will take place in 2020. The intern will play a crucial role in making Code:ART2 a huge success! A range of tasks may include conducting research, helping with artist selection panel facilitation, identifying temporary public art sites, mapping, and creating messaging for the upcoming event.
  • Research public art projects and festivals, artists and disciplines to create contact and project profiles. The intern will learn more about current trends in public art and creative place making, different types of projects, and enhance their analytical and research skills.
  • ยท Working with a collections management database / file retention. The PAP uses EmbARK, a collection management software to track all aspects of the City's public art collection that includes over a hundred of permanently sited artworks and murals and over 300 portable works of art. Much of the collection archives need to be digitized. The intern will master the fundamentals of data maintenance and work closely with staff to streamline cataloging collection files. Duties may include tracking and scanning paper files and slides, and formatting files using Adobe Acrobat.
  • Multimedia content creation for a mobile storytelling platform. The PAP recently launched a mobile experience for the Palo Alto's outdoor public art collection via STQRY, a mobile storytelling app. The intern will collaborate with staff, artists and platform developers to create and manage multimedia content including narratives, images, video and audio content for the outdoors public art collection.
  • Inventory and condition reporting of portable collection. Working with the public art database, the intern will conduct an inventory of portable collection of public art across Palo Alto city facilities, such as City Hall, Palo Alto libraries and community centers
Ideal Candidate:
  • Undergraduate student, college graduate, graduate student with experience and enthusiasm for the arts
  • Excellent written and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suites
  • Willingness to learn new systems
  • Familiarization with content management systems
  • Detailed Oriented
  • Genuine interest in arts administration with professional or academic experience in this area

The City of Palo Alto Public Art Program is committed to contributing to the intellectual, emotional, and creative life of the Palo Alto community by creating engaging art experiences and dynamic public spaces for Palo Alto residents and visitors. The Program operates in accordance with Chapter 2.26 of Palo Alto Municipal Code to provide opportunities for the placement of permanent and temporary site-specific public art projects in municipal projects across Palo Alto. Additionally, the Program oversees the implementation of the Ordinance requirement to incorporate public art in private development projects. The Public Art Commission (PAC) reviews and advises the Public Art Program on selection, placement, and care of public art throughout the City of Palo Alto.
