ORGANIZATION: Compass Rose International (DBA Global Orphan Prevention)

Overview:

Global Orphan Prevention is a nonprofit who strives to keep mothers and children together through economic development, awareness, and education, We work to address the orphan trade and child sex trafficking.

We seek a Denver-based volunteer Board Treasurer who is:

  • Committed to helping underprivileged children and widowed/abandoned mothers in Nepal, India, and Denver
  • Committed to using social entrepreneurship and educational opportunities to help eradicate and alleviate income generating hurdles in the regions we operate
  • Interested to stop the child sex trafficking trade and orphan home trade

The Board Treasurer will provide strategic and operational guidance to the organization, as well as:

  • Financial management and/or oversight: A Treasurer may manage or oversee the management of the financial affairs of the organization, often including such basic tasks as selecting a bank, reconciling bank statements, and managing cash flow. The Treasurer should be knowledgeable about who has access to the organization’s funds and any outstanding bills or debts owed. The Treasurer should create and maintain systems for ensuring the organization’s ongoing solvency and oversee the development of the organization’s financial policies.
  • Budgets: The Treasurer may be responsible for preparing or facilitating the preparation of an annual budget, as well as regularly monitoring and comparing the actual revenues and expenses incurred against such budget. The development of a budget that supports the organization’s goals and drives decision-making is an important part of an organization’s success in effectuating its mission.
  • Reports: The Treasurer should have thorough knowledge and understanding of the organization’s financial reports and important financial ratios. The Treasurer should keep the board apprised of key financial events, trends, and concerns, and their assessments of the organization’s fiscal health. The Treasurer is also generally responsible for completing or ensuring the completion of, required financial reporting forms (including the IRS Form 990) in a timely manner and making these forms available for the board’s review.
  • Financial Liaison: A skilled Treasurer should be able to translate financial concepts and information for board members who do not have financial backgrounds or substantial financial experience. The Treasurer should spend time learning the particulars of the organization’s finances and the applicable laws. The Treasurer can be most effective to the board when they are facilitating and encouraging the board’s strategic thinking about the short and long term financial vitality of the organization in relation to its advancement of the organization’s mission.

Additionally, this person should have a desire to leverage networks and contacts to further the organization's mission. Strong communication and people skills are desired. Requirements:

  • Expertise in nonprofit development, accounting/finances, and knowledge of developing countries
  • Prior board member experience preferred
  • Self-starter with strategic leadership skills
  • Passion for serving children and youth, and making a difference
  • Ability to serve 2 years, with the option to renew
  • Attend quarterly meetings (6:00-8:00 pm)
  • Attend an annual retreat or strategic planning meeting
  • Devote 4-10 hours/month for accounting needs
  • Serve as a Global Orphan Prevention Ambassador in their personal and professional communities

Compass Rose International uplifts young women to navigate unique challenges like child trafficking and mental health, providing tools for resilience, confidence, and independence.

Description

We help young women in both Nepal and Colorado.

  • In Nepal, our INpowerment Center & Dormitory in Ghyangphedi houses 40 full time residents, age 10-17, and is located in the #1 child trafficking district of the country. We provide them equal access to education, as well as self-development and real-life business skills.
  • In Colorado, our retreats and school programs help teen women find their internal wisdom, and source their power from within.
