Mt Rose Wilderness Weed Warriors #2

ORGANIZATION: Friends of Nevada Wilderness

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Mt. Rose Wilderness is a beautiful piece of nature right on the edge of Reno! Make a difference this spring and join us by removing invasive plants. Invasive plants upset the delicate balance of nature by outcompeting native plants, reducing wildlife habitat, degrading water quality, and increasing fire danger. This project is a fun and rewarding way to make a difference while spending the morning in a beautiful place! From the trailhead, we will hike 2-3 miles into the Mt.Rose Wilderness.

Please wear long pants, a face mask, long sleeves, and closed-toed shoes. Bring at least 2 liters of water (1 liter = approx. 2 typical size water bottles), sunscreen, and a lunch/snacks.

Mission Statement

Friends of Nevada Wilderness is dedicated to preserving all qualified Nevada public lands as wilderness, protecting all present and potential wilderness from ongoing threats, educating the public about the values of and need for wilderness, and improving the management and restoration of public wild lands.

Description

Are you interested in volunteering outside, exploring remote wild lands, taking care of your local public lands, making friends? Join Friends of Nevada Wilderness on a volunteer stewardship trip! Together we can keep our public lands and wilderness areas safe and clean. We would love to see you at our next stewardship project.

Friends of Nevada Wilderness organizes volunteer restoration trips to help wild landscapes recover from noxious weeds, illegal vehicle use, and other impacts (because official designations do not guarantee on-the-ground protection). Our volunteers also "adopt" areas to monitor their condition and advocate for their protection. Volunteers get to work with others to heal our wild places. These trips are fun, rewarding, and can be a great way to meet new Friends. All volunteers are welcome! We have volunteer opportunities for every skill level, ranging from getting out on the ground and pulling fence, picking up trash, naturalizing old roads, planting seedlings, monitoring wilderness, and yanking invasive plants to helping with outreach events and office tasks.

By helping citizens actively restore wild lands, we help build in them a greater sense of responsibility and stewardship.
