ADULT EDUCATION VOLUNTEER

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Catholic Charities El Centro Adult Education Program, located in Jamaica Plain, is one of the most effective programs in the Commonwealth for adult English language learners. The adult education volunteer works with adults who are learning the English language skills necessary for living and working in the community. The volunteer assists teachers as they manage the diverse learning needs of adult immigrant students. The volunteer assists a classroom teacher, working one-to-one with learners or directing small group activities, and conducts individual projects assigned by the teacher/counselor, e.g., helping students to apply for housing, create a resume, prepare for the citizenship exam, etc. Every effort is made to match volunteer’s skill set with classroom and learners’ needs which can include college level math and writing, life skills applications, and conversational partners.

Classroom volunteers are needed Monday-Friday 9:00AM-1:00PM. As a volunteer you must be able to commit to at least one shift per week for at least 3 months. Orientation and training will be provided. All volunteers must complete an application, an interview, and undergo a criminal background check.

REPORTS TO: Program Director (or assignee)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist English language learners practice speaking and improve conversation skills
  • Assist adult students to prepare for college exams
  • Mentor learners in transition to college
  • Assist classroom instructors of adult ESOL in implementing class plans
  • Assist the instructor of adult ESOL computer class, giving training and responding to student questions on basic computer knowledge, ESL software and websites
  • Assist students complete housing applications, create a resume, prepare for the citizenship exam, etc.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a positive attitude when working with students
  • Maintain confidential information and confidentiality of learners at all times

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in working with adults in a community-based agency
  • Ability to work in a multilingual and multicultural environment
  • Ability to interact with people in a group and on a one-on-one basis
  • Flexibility in fulfilling ad-hock tasks
  • Sensitivity to cultural differences and ability to relate well to a variety of people
  • Patience, understanding, flexibility, positive attitude
