Under the direct supervision of the Resident Services Coordinator Njeri Kamau-Devers, the watercolor instructor is responsible for leading a safe, relaxing and hands-on educational watercolor workshop for adults. The workshop will be tailored to the Swan’s Market Apartments resident population and their expressed needs. It shall be culturally relevant and age appropriate. The workshop may be developed and implemented for seniors and teenagers, some of whom speak Cantonese and/or Mandarin. The watercolor instructor is responsible for the design and curriculum with the assistance from the Resident Services Coordinator. The curriculum shall be designed to aid beginner adult and teenage students in learning basic watercolor skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and conduct onsite watercolor class for interested residents
  • Provide careful, safe instruction with attention paid to students’ abilities and limitations
  • Plan for classes, help Resident Services Coordinator set up room before and after class
  • Work closely with residents in promoting wellness and helping them realize their personal best

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Three years of experience teaching watercolor classes in community-based centers, certification preferred
  • Focus on brush stroke and color blending technique and careful instruction
  • Ensure that all interaction with clients are respectful and non-judgmental
  • Commitment to professionalism and punctuality
  • Respect residents’ privacy
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Bilingual, multi-lingual capabilities-especially Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) a plus but not required
  • Ability to work well with, respect, and assist low-income residents
  • Commitment to confidentiality of individuals’ personal information
Physical Demands
  • Ability to teach class and assist residents with watercolor technique
