Volunteer to help students tell their stories -- in Spanish!
ORGANIZATION: 826 Boston
Please visit the new page to apply.
826 Boston is a nonprofit youth writing and publishing organization that empowers traditionally underserved students ages 6-18 to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain communication skills to succeed in school and in life.
We are partnering with the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School to help Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE) tell their own stories. Ms. Sicairos-McCarthy’s Native Spanish Literacy class will work with volunteer tutors to write personal statements after reading Voces Sin Fronteras: Our Stories, Our Truth , a bilingual comic book written by 16 young people from the Latin American Youth Center in Washington, D.C.
826 Boston is recruiting five Spanish-fluent tutors per session to help students brainstorm, develop, and write their stories. Volunteers must be comfortable speaking, writing, and reading Spanish. Attendance at all three sessions is preferred, but not required. Training will be provided at the start of each session. Volunteers must complete a background check prior to volunteering.

Mission Statement
826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students in grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life.
Description
Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this understanding in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.
All of our free programs seek to strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.
